Truly “Friends of Jay Selthofner”, and warriors in many ways, Wisconsin jam band Brok’n Arrow will be featured during the upcoming campaign fundraiser concert for Friends of Jay Selthofner.  The 10 hour concert event is already being hailed as “historic”.  This will be a night to remember!  Brok’n Arrow is a band steeped in the musical melting pot of Rock / Blues / Jazz music. Weaving textures of style and intonation into the magic carpet that is Improv/Fusion Music. They have played beside and opened for such diverse acts as Arlo Guthrie, New Earth Mud and The Allman Brothers Band, Medeski, Martin & Wood and Blues greats Siegal/Schall. Brok’n Arrow brings an upbeat energy that is an extremely positive experience for any audience.  We are honored that they will play at the Sept 18th “Friends of Jay Selthofner Concert” in Ripon.

MUSICIANS: Jeremiah Jams - Jeffrey Smith - Cory Dedering - Many Lifetimes combined musical experience, 10+ years as Brok'n Arrow.

This isn’t the first time that Brok’n Arrow has come through and shown their support for Jay.  On April 20, 2010, they played at Jay’s THC Tour, held at Deacon Mills Park in Green Lake, Wisconsin.  This event was part of a series of events that Jay organized to raise awareness about hemp and cannabis in local communities across Wisconsin.

Jeff Smith also has a personal relationship with hemp cannabis and Selthofner.  They have shared the stage on several occasions including talking about hemp and cannabis at the THC Tour in Berlin and Appleton, which Selthofner organized.

Smith, a longtime hemp cannabis advocate had this to say “Through the use of cannabis hemp we can have a cleaner environment, better health and thousands of ‘living wage jobs.” Smith has written several letters to newspapers in Selthofner’s district, helping educated the readers of the area. He went on to add that “The facts are alcohol and cigarettes have combined to kill over a half a million people every year,while in ALL of recorded history there has never been one recorded death from cannabis use or overdose. So we have to ask ourselves, how does it make sense to make legal and available substances that have a proven ‘Death capability’ and make illegal the one that’s never killed anyone by usage?”


Coincidentally, seeing a notice posted about the Deacon Mills Park 4/20 THC Tour event on Facebook was what originally drew Jay’s treasurer (at the time, a complete stranger), to the park that fateful day.  Amazed that there would be a 4/20 event near by,  she and her husband wandered over and had the good fortune to meet Jay for the first time while Brok’n Arrow played in the background.  The fact that Jeremiah Jams, Jeffrey Smith -, and Cory Dedering have graciously agreed to play at the historic Friends of Jay Selthofner fundraiser concert is a sign that there are even more great things in store for the Friends of Jay Selthofner.

The Eau Claire Area NORML Supporters and rocking and rolling with their initiative to start a chapter.  Reporting the progress from their Facebook Page, the hemp cannabis and medical marijuana activists had already made some huge announcements.  One of the community leaders will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Cannabis Fair in Kendall, Wisconsin.  Not only that, but they are going to make sure the local supporters in the area are able to make it to Kendall by having a Carpool and Caravan to The Cannabis Fair in Kendall.  The group has gathered together a temporary board of directors and steering committee which must have helped drive the chapter to make their latest announcement.  The first “Official” sponsor/supporter of the chapter, and I am sure we will be hearing a great deal from these supporters.

Our 2nd Annual Free 420 Concert in the Park on April 20th, 2011 was met with some unexpected resistance.  SNOW!  We certainly got SNOWED OUT and our outdoor stage ended up buried, so we had a last minute change of venue. A big thank you to Christiano’s Pizza in Green Lake, Wisconsin for allowing us to take our 420 Concert indoors and in their venue.

On a side note, Christiano’s was one of the local business that just a year earlier was brave enough to allow us to hold our meetings at their establishment.  Our chapter soon found a home in our local public library with additional and valuable resources.  We conducted and continue to bring awareness meetings and expo style events to libraries throughout Wisconsin as our public awareness campaign.  This event, which not only brought awareness to the public via print, radio, internet and cable access media, but we were pretty loud also…so I am sure a few people heard our music and our message.  It was a awesome event, great fellowship and excellent music.

Northern Wisconsin NORML participates in the first Willie Nelson Teapot Party Meetups

The first Teapot Party Meetup took place on Wednesday December 15th, 2010.  According to CelebStoner More than 500 were scheduled and nearly 1,000 people signed up.  Northern Wisconsin NORML, along with folks as far north as Wausau and south as Madison were expected to participate and dozens of more were trying to gain enough momentum to get off the ground.   Founded by Willie Nelson, the Teapot Party “leans a little to the left” and supports taxing and regulating marijuana, which maybe difficult for some right leaning activists in the area.

The last election cycle the Republicans stole the show.  Our group discussed the recent elections and also the National Teapot Party movement spawned by Willie Nelson’s recent arrest.  The chapter meets on a weekly basis, so the announcement of a Dec 15th and Jan 18th kick off dates only re-enforced the principals of what we communicate with our legislators and general public on a consistent basis.  Our hope is that the additional attention spawns new activists to join the already growing marijuana movement in Wisconsin.  As our chapter has maintained, marijuana is not a issue that leans left or right and knows no party lines.  All more encouraging that reform is coming was the announcement that Senator Luther Olsen (R-Ripon) will be addressing the chapter at their December 21st meeting.

Not only is the Teapot Party brewing but Change.org also has a petition for you to sign asking Willie Nelson Please Hold a Benefit Concert to Promote Pot Legalization.

With marijuana legalization initiatives expected to be on the 2012 ballot in states like Colorado and California, the next year will be crucial in building momentum for reform. And Willie Nelson can help: just as he founded Farm Aid 25 years ago to support struggling farmers in the U.S., he should launch a benefit concert in 2011 aimed at drawing attention to the struggle to end pot prohibition.

Unfortunately the Wausau area only saw one hard core activist brave the cold (we have been thinking of having a “Cannabis Activist” of the month award starting in the new year, I think the Wausau guy gets the nomination for sure!).  Northern Wisconsin NORML ended up participating in the party with four members setting aside 20 minutes to talk about hemp and cannabis with truth, honesty and compassion.  In the end, we look forward to the next month and seeing what the January 18th meeting date produces for Wisconsin Teapot Party enthusiasts.

Mark your calendar for this Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 for the 3rd Annual Big Green Sustainable Music Festival (http://thebiggreenfest.com/), which will be held from Noon – 10pm at the Kimberly Amphitheater in Sunset Park, Kimberly, WI.

NORML Rich will be there representing Northern Wisconsin NORML. Stop by and say hi! This is the 2nd year that we will have a table at the music festival.

The festival features live music, local food and marketplace, handcrafted beers, speakers and exhibits.

This near zero waste public festival raises awareness of sustainability, encourages community involvement, supports diversity, and enhances our creative culture.

Proceeds from the event benefit Sustainable Fox Valley, a non-profit 501c(3), to further its goals for the Fox Valley Region of Wisconsin:

  • Resilient and self-reliant local economies
  • Opportunities for all to thrive in their community

Bio: A group of five musical theorists transmuting their au fait sound through the band [the] commuter exit. The band formed in 2002, and came into it’s current form in 05’, after Edwin Wolf’s hostile takeover of the song that is now known as “Pessimist”. With a sound like no other, [the] commuter exit can be classified as “progressive/experimental/rock”. The debut, live studio album “Inoculation” (late 2009) truly holds a place in your Ipod; somewhere between Faith no More’s Eclecticism and the experimentation of Sonic Youth. A real build you up and trip you out that will hold your ears hostage. “Three Headed Animals” feels like more of a secret song with a hint of beat box then an introduction; really highlighting their experimental side. One of the longest songs on the album “Elboadom” draws you in and captures you by the time the drums start building the tempo. The keys are present throughout the entire album and undoubtedly prominent in “Fade”. The last song of the album is “Ramification Embracement”. It’s truly an encore song, that could have multiple endings. Just when you think the ballad is on it’s way to Tranquillo close, a Vivo of twisted strings and keys comes blasting through your speakers. Inoculation is certainly a masterpiece that will keep you pressing repeat.
