On September 9, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Neal Plotkin (D-Glendale) who is running for the 8th Senate District in the upcoming general election.

We archived the interview at the 10:57 mark when Neal Plotkin addressed medicinal cannabis, but seemed to dodge the recreational marijuana question and not provide a clear stance on his view.

He acknowledges Wisconsin is one of the few states with totally illegal marijuana and says he supports medicinal use of marijuana as an initial step with state regulations controlling the distribution of the product. This is an important step forward and gives the state a chance to integrate marijuana into the society and see how that works and adds “we see where the nation is heading on this” but like anything we need to watch how this develops.

Listen and watch for your self:

The campaign for Neal Plotkin has not returned our messages nor has his campaign completed the 2020 NORML Candidate Questionnaire.

He did receive a C- rating from NORML during the Smoke the Vote Project.

If you are in his district, please contact him with your support of marijuana reform and help move this candidate on the issue. You can follow and message his campaign on facebook and visiting his website at His website contact info link and

Alberta Darling has held this Senate seat for nearly 30 years and held onto her prohibitionist position just as long.  It is no wonder she received a failing grade from NORML during the current legislative session.

Position on Marijuana Legalization: She disproves of marijuana legalization. When asked in March 2019 if legalization will happen based on the overwhelming support in the state, she replied: “No, and I’ll tell you why. We have to do research on why it’s so popular and what the benefits are.

She is a member of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety, that killed “Adult Use / Recreational – Medical Combo” Legislation;  Senate Bill 377.

Position on Medical Marijuana: Alberta Darling disapproved of Tony Evers’ plan to legalize medical marijuana in Wisconsin, saying in January 2019: “Right now, I think there’s enough concern that I think we’d really have to do our homework and dig deep into research, whether we want to go full out on that issue.
