With a gubernatorial proclamation declaring October 18 as “Wisconsin Hemp Day”, Governor Evers again shows his support for the hemp cannabis plant. His continued support of the Wisconsin Industrial Hemp Program and cannabis reform is greatly appreciated from those in the fields and offices working on the issue.

Governor Evers platform is still to support decriminalizing marijuana, establish a medical marijuana program for Wisconsin and he has assured the public he would sign those measures into law should they hit his desk.

Although he included decriminalization and medical marijuana items in his budget, the Republican controlled legislature stripped all marijuana reform from the budget. Not only did Republicans remove marijuana reform from the budget, they also withheld any of the marijuana reform related bills from advancing even to a public hearing, essentially killing the bills on arrivial.

We are very happy that the Industrial Hemp bills overcame past prejudices and Republican obstacles to become law just a few short years ago. The support for Industrial Hemp continues to grow as the program evolves, but need for reform is still present and in the faces of our elected officials to discuss and take action.

We helped celebrate and promote Wisconsin Hemp Day at our NORML Booth and Bake Sale at the annual From the Land Festival held on the Heritage Hemp Farm in Green Lake. The farmstead is rooted deep in hemp history and they continue on the legacy using a Wisconsin landrace strain to produce a wide variety of hemp and CBD products.

Help Wisconsin Activists get one last rally in before the summer ends!

Come help promote the need to reform the hemp cannabis laws in Wisconsin and the United States of America.

Industrial Hemp, Medicalization, Decriminalization, Legalization – it does not matter why you support reform, what matters is to get out there and let people know, let people know we need their help.

Although Wisconsin State Legislation regarding marijuana reform is not active atm, we need you to contact your State Senator and State Assembly Representative and help them understand the importance of sponsoring or co-sponsoring future legislation to reform the marijuana laws.

Federally speaking, we need you to contact your Congressional Representative and US Senators regarding House Bill 1983, the States’ Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act and House Bill and HR 2306 Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011.

Along with support for HR 1831 The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2011 and the companion bill in the Senate S.3501, constant public awareness of these bills needs and consistent contact from constituents on the issue of marijuana reform are needed today!

Activists from around the state plan to gather to promote these bills and create awareness for the need to reform the marijuana laws. Participants will meet at the corner of Wisconsin St and High Ave in Oshkosh. This location is near a busy intersection and the UW-Oshkosh campus.  The first wave of activists are expected to be there at HIGH NOON, being joined by the second wave at about 2:00pm.  The groups plan to be on the streets around the are until approximately 4:20!  Bring Your Own!  Signs that is, but usually someone brings extra markers and whiteboards!

The local chapter of NORML, Northern Wisconsin NORML will be there and are sponsoring the “Best Sign Contest” and will have a T-shirt/support gear package for the winning sign maker. A photographer will be there to snap a picture of your rally sign and a winner will be chosen at Thursday September 13th meeting in Appleton.

Northern Wisconsin NORML meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month for food, fellowship and public meeting. This is the video from the meeting held on Thursday, September 13th, 2012. The video did cut out for a short time just fast forward to 7:55 and it will pick right back up.

Check the calendar of events often for updates, things to bring to the meeting and to confirm agendas.

Join us from 4:20pm to 5:30pm as the chapter board of directors, along with members and supporters enjoy fellowship as an informal group gathering together prior to our meeting. The meeting location is the Harmony Cafe, 233 E College Ave in Appleton, which has food and beverages available for sale.

At 5:30pm we begin our general meeting, which is expected to last until 7:00pm, sometimes finishing early, but we have the room reserved up till 8pm in case we need to go longer.

Meetings are open to the general public and you need not a be a member to attend.

Meetings are also broadcast over the Internet via Google + Hangouts. NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE ON CAMERA UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE, ONLY BOARD OF DIRECTORS MODERATING THE MEETING ARE BROADCAST.

On Thursday February 21st, cannabis reform supporters from across Wisconsin will be gathering at the capitol to meet with legislators to discuss cannabis law reform. Join us so we can have a strong, unified voice!

Never lobbied before? No problem! Lobbying is just a fancy term for talking to lawmakers about a policy issue.​ We will have a lobby training before the meetings take place and will give you handouts with talking points and tips to make sure you’re prepared. We’ll be meeting with lawmakers in groups, so you won’t have to talk to them alone.

In order to make the best use of everyone’s time, SE WI NORML will take on the responsibility of scheduling the meetings with the representatives so we can meet in groups. An RSVP is recommended – so we can schedule a meeting with your representative – but we’ll also have meetings setup with powerful legislative and committee leaders that we can direct you to if you don’t RSVP

Wisconsin marijuana activists prompt more letters to the editors supporting hemp cannabis.

A brief and effective letter is keeping hemp cannabis in front of the eyes of readers of local newspapers in Wisconsin.  It is the hope of Northern Wisconsin NORML and other marijuana activists hope that this type of activity spawns need citizens to get active with their community leaders and elected officials representing our interests.

It appears a recent editorial in the postcrescent.com entitled Help Support Hemp Production was spurred in part by another editorial by frequent writer and activist, Jeffrey Smith.  The original article my Jeffrey Smith spawned blog reports with the headings “Appleton Post Crescent reader demands Doyle calls lame duck session on jobs and finish Wisconsin’s Industrial Hemp Bill” among others.  With a lame duck session pending, will more readers respond and become active?

Thanks to Jeffrey Smith for his letter to the editor about the Industrial Hemp Farming Act being considered as state legislation. This bill would ultimately help our diminishing farmsteads again thrive in Wisconsin. Your letter helps to raise awareness, and hopefully will get people involved to call their representatives to pass this bill.

The hemp plant can be grown in Wisconsin and is harvested in 120 days. Hemp is a non-drug cannabis that has low THC content. It’s naturally resistant to most pests. It can reduce soil erosion, and water and air pollution.

One acre of hemp will produce as much fiber as two to three acres of cotton. Hemp has many uses, including durable fabric and textiles. These clothes last twice as long as cotton-made clothes.

In addition, hemp health foods are a great source of vegetable protein and vitamins. Hemp seeds can be made into many of the same products as soybeans.

Hemp paper products last longer, don’t discolor as quickly and can be recycled more times than paper from trees. One acre of hemp can produce as much paper as two to four acres of trees.

Hemp can be used in fossil fuels such as ethanol and diesel and in products such as paint, varnish, ink, detergent, beauty items, lotions, candles, jewelry, plastics and more.

Let’s keep the people of Wisconsin employed by using this fine product. It’s a great resource because of its countless uses.

Green Man comes to Oshkosh to help end federal marijuana prohibition rally with sign contest

Reports are flying in that the JRMMA, or Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act is back in drafting with Wisconsin Legislators. Until an official bill number is released, we urge supporters of marijuana reform to continue to contact their elected officials and subscribe to our blog for further updates as they become available.  Currently the Northern Wisconsin NORML Chapter is in the process of canvasing and creating public awareness in the Fox Valley area.  A Signature Drive Contest is planned in conjunction with the August 17th meeting.

Oshkosh has been selected for a street side awareness campaign for the support of marijuana reform.  We expect to see the usual signs out and about “HONK FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA”, “MEDICAL MARIJUANA IS HEALTHCARE” and “HEMP IS JOBS”, but will there be a clever one that grabs the attention of our judge.  What?  A judge…well that must mean there is a contest, right?

Green Man

A special treat will be had as Oshkosh and Fox Valley supporters team up with NORML Jay and Green Man.  Only in town for a short time, Green Man is an awareness figure known throughout the universe and will eventually bring peace and harmony to us all with his cannabis message.  Or maybe he is just goofy and we will have a ton of fun.  The crew is meeting up in Oshkosh at the Target, near the EAA grounds, so drive careful.   We plan to meet and begin at 4:20pm and will last an hour or two….so show up on time for once! (you know who…and if you don’t—-I am talking to you ZAC!)

Oh yeah, the contest…almost forgot.  The Best support hemp, marijuana, cannabis, drug policy reform sign at tomorrows rally in Oshkosh as judged by Green Man can take their pick out of bag of goodies.  HEY…not that bag…I meant our stash of stuff…no, our support gear…yeah, that’s it…just show up, bring a friend and bring two signs, we will have a camera, but bring a camera also, just in case.

If you cannot join in, please organize your own local street side awareness campaign for tomorrow sometime. It does not have to be big, it does not have to be long, just get out there! Remember to take a camera along and come back to Northern Wisconsin NORML facebook page and post a picture or video of your group and a great still picture of your awareness sign for the contest!  We hope this spurs some activity and if we can will try to reward all those who participate or do stuff like this again, and again, and again.  Maybe we can try a final best picture contest of all the signs made, we can put it up on the blog and let you vote!  So stay tuned and make sure you post your pictures on the Northern Wisconsin NORML Facebook Page.
