Unfortunately Republican Terry Katsma from Oostburg has not sponsored any marijuana reform legislation since being elected to the State Assembly in 2014 and has not been very public about the issue of marijuana reform.

During 2019 the Assembly Republicans prefiled a bill for the 2020 legislative session to create a medical marijuana program in Wisconsin (Assembly Bill 750) which Assembly Rep. Katsma did not sponsor.

Late in the session an additional bi-partisan effort to decriminalize 10 grams of marijuana for personal possession was offered for co-sponsorship and again, Katsma did not act or support this measure.

VS

Mary Lynne is running for state assembly in district 26 to represent Sheboygan County. She has dedicated her life to helping others and has a passion for her community. Mary Lynne served on the School Board and is currently on the Sheboygan City Council.

Here is her position on cannabis reform that her campaign sent me:

Let’s legalize marijuana now, both for recreational and medicinal use.

The war against cannabis has, for too long, consumed too much of law enforcement and judicial time. Now is the time to legalize marijuana and regulate its use, just like we regulate alcohol consumption.

There are clear reasons to do this. It can provide an important income stream for state and local governments, just like alcohol does. It can provide much needed relief for people suffering from debilitating pain and disability. If legalized, marijuana can be regulated to ensure that products that are sold are safe and consumers know what they are getting.

When marijuana is legalized, we can stop locking people up for using it. The “war on drugs” has led to disproportionate prosecution of people of color and unnecessary incarceration at a rate far higher than in white communities. This costs taxpayers money we shouldn’t have to spend. More importantly, convictions for using marijuana haunt people for life, creating a criminal record that makes it hard to get work or a place to live.

The time is now. We need to get this done.

NORML awarded her a grade of A+.
