Senate District 30 Candidates Views on Marijuana Reform

The 30th District of the Wisconsin Senate is located in eastern Wisconsin, and is currently composed of parts of Brown, Oconto, and Marinette counties. It includes part of the city of Green Bay. (MAP)

Campaign 2020: Sandra Ewald (D) Green Bay – 30th Senate District
On July 1, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Sandra Ewald (D-Green Bay) who is running for the 30th Senate District in the upcoming partisan primary election.
Sandra Ewald stated she supported decriminalizing 25 grams or less of marijuana and also legalizing of use of marijuana by responsible adults, citing a 2017 study projecting a revenue of $138 million to Wisconsin and an additional $40 to $100 million in tax payer savings.

Campaign 2020: Jonathon Hansen (D) Green Bay – 30th Senate District
On June 30, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Jonathon Hansen (D-Green Bay) who is running for the 30th Senate District in the upcoming partisan primary election.
In the interview, Hansen states he is 100% support medical marijuana, but he states he is not in support of legalizing recreational marijuana right now, with his concerns being impaired driving and an increased minor use. He went onto to express concerns over an emerging big marijuana industry and advertising targeting minors like the tobacco industry. He went on to say we should “hold off” and called for more research and studies in the states that have legalized before we move forward here.

Eric Wimberger is the Republican candidate on the ticket. Wimberger ran in 2014 for State Assembly (lost by 18% points) and who also ran for the Wisconsin State Senate for District 30 in 2016 and only lost by 3% points will try for State Senate again in 2020 as the incumbent retires. He joined the Political Radar crew to in 2016 to discuss several key issues that are emerging in Wisconsin. They discuss the viability of marijuana legalization in Wisconsin and its challenges. Based of his interviews of the years, I hope his views have continued to evolve:
