Emily Voight (D) to challenge Ron Tusler (R)
The 3rd Assembly District (MAP) includes the following :
- Stockbridge
- Sherwood
- Brillion
- Harrison
- Buchanan
- Combined Locks
- Kimberly
- Little Chute
- Appleton
- Menasha
- Woodville
Elected in 2018, Tusler a Republican from Harrison did not sponsor any legislation on marijuana reform in 2019-2020.
But he earned some extra credit points in 2019 by actually calling a voter in his district back after they sent an email to them regarding AB 570, the medical marijuana bill with home grows and smoking allowed, adding onto the potential “YES” votes to this piece of legislation.
His ability to gain extra credits would be to help move publicly supported bipartisan medical marijuana through committee.
Rep. Tusler Position on Marijuana Legalization:
Oct 2018: Would you support changing state law to legalize marijuana and/or cannabis products? If so, under what conditions? If not, why?
Tusler: Unsure. The preservation of human life is very important to me. The number of accidental deaths on the highways as a result of intoxicated driving from marijuana use has escalated dramatically in states that have legalized marijuana. I’d like to see this issue resolved in other states before our citizens die.
Position on Marijuana Decriminalization:
Position on Medical Marijuana: Oct 2019 (Before Republican Bill AB750 was out and only the home grow bill AB570 was in play) A Northern Wisconsin NORML Field Activist spoke with Rep Tusler October 10th, 2019 regarding legalization of medical cannabis. He stated if a vote were taken today, he would vote in favor. However, he said one thing that concerns him is some doctors at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Madison are opposed to it, saying it is dangerous for teenagers and they apparently feel it would just lead to abuse, just like we have with alcohol.

2020 Candidate Questionnaire was completed by Ron Tusler in which Tusler indicated he supports medical marijuana. He also indicated he supported decriminalization of simple possession of marijuana, adding he supported the automatic expungement of non-violent marijuana possession convictions for “personal possession, but no dealers“.
He also asked him, Legalizing the responsible adult-use of marijuana provides states the opportunity to take marijuana off the street corner and place it behind an age-verified counter to better provide for consumer and public safety and prevent youth access. Taxing and regulating the adult-use of marijuana also provides economic stimulus through job creation and tax revenue. Do you support or oppose legalizing and regulating the responsible use of marijuana by adults? His answer was YES, he supports this, but then followed up with this statement: “I am neither for or against legalizing. Both are troublesome options. Full legalization worries me because I don’t think getting high away from home is a good idea.“

I reached out to the campaign of Emily Voight for an early statement on marijuana reform and she immediately replied: “I’m for full legalization of marijuana, adding I think we need to follow the model of Colorado for taxation and regulation.”
She did indicate support for home grows if for personal use and not for sale. She closed out the conversation “Especially with everything going on, if marijuana were fully legal that would cut down on the number of arrests and people in prison.”
Emily Voight has completed the 2020 NORML Questionnaire and received an A+ rating during the Smoke the Vote Project.
