August 2018: We can’t forget to address our broken criminal justice system. We have too many people trapped in a cycle of crime, incarceration, and recidivism. We need to legalize marijuana, expunge criminal records and end the failed truth-in-sentencing law, which prevents parole.
Assembly District 29 is partly in St. Croix and Dunn County (Map) is going to see a new face for the 2019-2020 legislative session as the Republican Incumbent is not running for this seat. Will it be one of these three Republicans? The face off in a highly contended primary will result in the winner to face a Democrat John Rocco Calabrese in the general election.
On the position of marijuana reform, we have to thank Wi Eye for the candidate interviews and “marijuana” question. It is nice to hear their views in their voices and watch their mannerisms.

Republican Party Candidates
On July 2, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Clint Moses (R-Menomonie) who is running for the 29th Assembly District in the upcoming partisan primary election.
Clint Moses is a Chiropractor, in the video he says he used to be against marijuana in any form…but he does support medical now, because of his practice he witnessed patients use cannabis with great success, especially chronic pain. He goes onto state that any drug could be misused, like tobacco or alcohol. Recreational marijuana is a little grey for him, saying it is not an area he can jump 100% on board with.
On July 2, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Neil Kline (R-New Richmond) who is running for the 29th Assembly District in the upcoming partisan primary election.
Neil Kline said “open to medical” plenty of people who could benefit and plenty of states have done it for data; recreational also open to talking about that, especially about criminal justice reform, huge impacts on minorities. He would like to get law enforcement input, like to see testing for impairment strategies, like alcohol.
On July 1, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Ryan Sherley (R-New Richmond) who is running for the 29th Assembly District in the upcoming partisan primary election.
Ryan Sherley speaks about his position on marijuana reform: he says medical marijuana is important, but states impaired driving and not having a test to check for marijuana impairment has concerns for him on recreational side. He mentions slippery slope and ‘looked at statistics from Colorado’, on recreational the initial statistics about increased crime rate, motor vehicle accidents and then goes onto indicate the research he reviewed says it is a gateway and more research needs to be done there.
After the Primary Election in August, one of these guys will go onto face the Democrat in the general election in November.
And that Democrat is John Rocco Calabrese. First off, his Facebook page header picture is one of the best I have saw since reporting on the races. Secondly, WI EYE was not interviewed him yet, they are interviewing the candidates that have a contested primary election. Last, many candidates already have a public statement of marijuana reform, with many of them listing marijuana reform as and issue or priority for their campaigns.
His campaign did have an early statement on marijuana reform we are happy to report another supporter in the candidate column. Here is his position on marijuana reform:
“I firmly believe marijuana should be legalized for medical and recreational use. It should be taxed and regulated and there should be mechanisms in place to allow residents to grow their own up to a certain amount. We should also expunge the records of anyone in prison or on probation for non violent marijuana related infractions.“
Assembly District 17 is in Milwaukee County (Map), northeast section of Wauwatosa area. The district will see a new face this session as Rep. David Crowley does not seek re-election. Who will fill his shoes and will they also support marijuana reform like Crowley did? Early campaign interviews seem to indicate yes.

Abie Eisenbach (R)
On September 3, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer interviewed Abie Eisenbach (R-Milwaukee) who is running for the 17th Assembly District in the upcoming general election.
In his WI EYE interview, Abie Eisenbach asks if there is a Doctor in the Senate or Assembly currently. (The answer is no). He next leads into talking of alternative ways to raise money…. at the 7:18 mark the interviewer hits Abie with the ‘marijuana question. Abie replies “they are buying it already anyways, it is another was to raise revenue in the state….. again watch and listen to the candidate himself, we qued up the interview below for you to start a the m word……
On July 21, 2020, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Mary Spicuzza interviewed Supreme Moore Omokunde (D-Milwaukee) who is running for the 17th Assembly District in the upcoming partisan primary election.
Supreme Moore Omokunde said he does support both medical and recreational. He speaks in depth about his stance on marijuana reform, including decriminalization and expunging. Kooyenga is again making sense as he runs for Senate and is embracing the compassion aspect of medical marijuana in a campaign interview. Letting the sick, dying and disabled find medical relief from smoking pot and eating marijuana infused foods is what medical marijuana means to most people who hear the term. I hear the Republican candidate Kooyenga calling out for the need to hold a public hearing on the issue and if elected, will watch for him to work on decriminalization and medical cannabis reform in the 2019-2020 legislative session.

31% – Be legal for medical purposes only and available only by prescription through a medical dispensary?
15% – Remain a criminally illegal drug as provided under current law?
Charlie Walker (R)
On September 16, 2020, WisconsinEye senior producer Steve Walters interviewed Charlie Walker (R-Eau Claire) who is running for the 91st Assembly District in the upcoming general election.
For being a jobs and tourism guy, Charlie Walker does not mention or associate marijuana reform with this items, instead… he associates marijuana with huffing and meth? He “thinks” he could support medical marijuana, but the devil is in the details.

As a freshman Democrat in the Assembly, Rep. Emerson stood out as a sponsor of the Adult Use/Medical combination bill we know as “Legalize Marijuana – Legalize Opportunity”. She also sponsored the Decriminalization bill that entered the legislation session late this year. We thank her for her support on the issue and are happy to issue a solid A grade for this Eau Claire area representative.
Rep. Born has been somewhat quiet regarding his support for medical marijuana reform and comes in as a late co-sponsor to the Republican bill to create a medical marijuana program.
Mark Born is an American law enforcement officer and politician. Born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Born graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College. He then worked in the Dodge County, Wisconsin sheriff department. Born also served on the Beaver Dam Common Council.

Izzy Hassey Nevarez clearly believes in legalizing marijuana for both medical and recreational use, his website says so!

I watched this and saw the Democrat (Johnson) and Republican (James) oppose legalizing recreational marijuana. But having Law Enforcement (Republican James) on our side for medical marijuana cannot hurt. Interesting district to watch this upcoming election!
