Jay Selthofner of Green Lake announced this week that he will challenge state Rep. Joan Ballweg, R-Markesan, for Wisconsin State Assembly in District 41.

Selthofner is running as an independent candidate.

According to his campaign material, he is passionate about improving the local economy and that state’s environment and understands the problems facing the farmers, businesses, families and other citizens.

Selthofner likely is best known for his efforts to legalize marijuana, also known as hemp cannabis in Wisconsin.

He believes doing so would not only create jobs and generate revenue for the state, but that it also would help the environment.

According to his campaign, industrial hemp cannabis can yield three to eight dry tons of fiber per acre — four times what an average forest can yield.
