In memory of an activist, Rick A. Andersen

by NORMLJay on June 6th, 2010 at 10:34 PM

This past year I was able to reach out to a relative that I had not saw in years, mainly because of my cannabis activism.   The last time we spent together was doing very meaningful activities to reform the current marijuana laws.  He was true in nature and his actions will have a lasting effect on all of us for years to come.

His personal story is just that, personal.  His public story and fight to help our cause is something that needs to be recorded and no doubt something to be very proud of.

His philosophy of “call a horse a horse and an ass an ass” worked well on the phone with elected officials.  His straight forward approach and not threatening attitude made it easy for everyone to relate to him in person.  When he explained how medical cannabis benefited patients, people listened.  Rick was in pain everyday, his doctors, family and support network knew cannabis could help with his pain management, his appetite and his mental well being.  Cannabis would have made a positive impact on his life and Rick made a positive impact on mine; even inspiring on camera courage with Fox 11 News in Green Bay (http://www.northernwinorml.org/Press.html)

Rick knew cannabis would help, but unfortunately died without a safe medicine, his potentially life saving medicine, was not legal yet.  His hands where tied by laws and the doctor’s pain management contracts, but sick, in pain and dying he did something meaningful everyday.  Rick assisted me with conversations directly with District 14 Wisconsin State Senator Luther Olsen, who after that listening session expressed favor for the reform of marijuana laws.

With a sense of urgency on a phone call just days before his passing, he shared with me his conversations with staffers and elected officials down in Madison and the progress he had and had not made.  He knew that his elected officials did not have to agree 100% with his own viewpoints, but he sure felt that some of his elected officials did not care about him 1%, which just was not right.

His life will live on through his daughters, family and friends.  His courage will live on through me.  His actions will carry onto all of us as we do our own something meaningful everyday in our own way.  Little, big, public or private, now is the time to act.

Dedicated to Rick A. Andersen; born January 26th, 1966 and died February 18th, 2010.   Author of poem is not known.

Rick Andersen In memory of an activist, Rick A. Andersen

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high

And you want to smile, you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is unique with its twists and turns,

As everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–

You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out–

The silver tint of the clouds no doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–

It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Northern Wisconsin NORML’s free fishing event was fun!

GreenLake3754 300x225 Northern Wisconsin NORMLs free fishing event was fun!

Kids enjoying our free literature about fishing and the different types of fish. With safety in mind, lead-free lures were also available for free.

This past weekend we held an event to celebrate Wisconsin’s free fishing weekend.  We had a good time!  The DNR stopped out to see our unique event, which we thought was exciting, and they were just in time to get a great picture of  a supporter from Madison NORML and a fish that he caught (and released).

Free Fishing Weekend draws friends from near and far

All in all, I would say it was a success! Several people brought food and beverages for our potluck picnic.  Alex Toast played the guitar, and we met some new friends.  We had a great turnout, considering that there were other free fishing weekend events going on in the surrounding areas.  We had hoped for more people to attend, but I think that’s part of the larger problem that we are going to be addressing in the months to come. Imagine if we embraced Pot in the Future instead of fearing it!

I think that many people are curious and interested in learning more about NORML and even volunteering, but they may be afraid to be seen out and about in support of Marijuana, Industrial Hemp, or any related issues because of how controversial the topic has been for the last 60 years or so.  That’s very understandable.

However, I think that the time has come for the world to listen and understand that supporting Marijuana or Industrial Hemp is not shameful.  We are talking about a plant which is natural, and which is very safe to use.  Much safer and more nutritious than many of the FDA approved drugs and foods and chemicals that we use on a daily basis!

We need to educate the public so that they learn to separate the truth from the myths, and come to understand how helpful it would be to legalize not only medical marijuana but also industrial hemp.

Industrial Hemp

Did you know that our founding fathers were all Industrial Hemp farmers?  George Washington, Thomas Jefferson… they grew hemp.   It is not shameful to discuss utilizing this wonder plant the way that our founding fathers did.  If hemp paper was good enough to draft the Declaration of Independence on, and to draft the Constitution on (the final documents were made of Parchment – but the drafts were hemp paper) then why isn’t it good enough to grow and use today?

George Washington Grew Hemp

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I think that the majority of people are too afraid to come to a public event which is associated with marijuana or hemp or cannabis because they fear they will be judged, or even that they will get in trouble, or lose their jobs.  The fact that our society is so terrified to be associated with a simple plant is a problem that needs to be fixed.

What I am asking is that you try to overcome that fear in the following months, and attend some of our upcoming events, and volunteer, and try to forward the cause of legalizing marijuana in Wisconsin.  I am also nervous about being associated with such a controversial subject, but I realize that in order to achieve any kind of change, we have to stand up and speak out about what we believe and why we believe it.  We can’t educate others if we are hiding timidly in the shadows.

Hemp - it's just a plant

At any rate, we did have a great turnout considering that we are a brand new organization who is just starting out, and I was really pleased to see so many strangers stop by and check out the signs and literature that was available. We hope to meet many more new supporters and members in the coming months. We could really use your support and assistance to make future events like this possible!

Thanks so much to everyone who showed up and volunteered, donated, supported, socialized, and fished! It was wonderful to meet you!
